Chevy Volt fire prompts safety probe: Chevy Volt fire prompts safety probe The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched a probe into the safety of lithium-ion batteries used to power electric vehicles after a Chevy Volt caught fire at a federal testing center, according to several reports Friday. The investigation will not only focus on General Motors' flagship electric, but is also looking into offerings from Ford Motor Co. and Nissan Motors . The news didn't keep shares of all three car makers from logging gains in Friday's session. Nissan led the way with a 2% advance.
